How the countdowns work

A countdown is only as good as its date. Fixed holidays such as Christmas and Halloween are easy, but many holidays move: Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, Memorial Day the last Monday of May, and Easter follows the first full moon of spring. The dates here are calculated from those rules for any year, not copied from a list, and the seasons are timed to the minute of the equinox or solstice.

The numbers you see when a page opens were correct on the day the page was built. A moment later the timer switches to your device's clock, counts to midnight at the start of the day in your time zone, and keeps ticking. When a day has passed, its countdown moves on to next year without anyone touching it.

Every countdown can be added to your calendar, shared as a link or an image, or embedded on your own site. For the date alone, with the weekday and a ten-year table, see When is…?.
