How the birthday countdown counts
It finds the next time your birth month and day come round, today included, and counts the calendar days to it. On the day itself it says so, and the day after it starts counting to next year.
Why your birthday falls on a different weekday each year
A year of 365 days is 52 weeks and one day, so a birthday moves one weekday later each year. When a February 29 comes in between, it moves two.

How many days until my birthday?

What day of the week is my birthday this year?
The date line under the timer shows the weekday of your next birthday. Because a year is 52 weeks and one day, a birthday moves forward one weekday each year, or two when a leap day falls in between.
What happens if I was born on February 29?
In leap years the countdown runs to February 29. In other years it uses February 28, the last day of the month. Leap years follow the Gregorian rule the US Naval Observatory sets out: every fourth year, except century years not divisible by 400.
