Why some holiday dates move

Holidays fall into three groups. Fixed dates, such as Christmas (December 25) or Juneteenth (June 19), land on a different weekday each year.

Weekday holidays are a certain weekday of a month, such as the fourth Thursday of November for Thanksgiving. The weekday stays the same and the date shifts within a week.

Easter-based days depend on the church's full moon: Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21, as the US Naval Observatory explains. Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are counted back from it, so they can move by more than a month.

US federal holidays in 2027

Federal law, 5 U.S.C. 6103, lists eleven legal public holidays. When one falls on a Saturday, federal offices close on the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, on the Monday after, and the Office of Personnel Management publishes those days each year.

Five of the eleven holidays fall on a fixed date, so in some years they land on a weekend and federal offices close on the nearest weekday instead.
