Juneteenth facts and traditions
Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people there were free.
Juneteenth celebrations date from 1866, first as church-centered gatherings in Texas. In 2021 it became the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983.
