Mother's Day in the United States, Canada, Australia and many other countries is the second Sunday of May. The United Kingdom and Ireland instead keep Mothering Sunday, three weeks before Easter.
Mother's Day was started by Anna Jarvis, with the first service held in Grafton, West Virginia, on May 10, 1908. On May 8, 1914, Congress named the second Sunday in May Mother's Day, and President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it the next day.

- Jarvis wanted the singular "Mother's": each family honoring its own mother.
- Canada has kept the same date since 1914.
