How the date of Easter is set

In Western churches Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21, using the church's own tables for the moon. It can fall anywhere from March 22 to April 25.

Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. Western churches (Catholic and Protestant) set the date with the Gregorian calendar; most Orthodox churches use the Julian calendar, so Orthodox Easter usually falls later.

As the US Naval Observatory explains, the church fixes the equinox at March 21 and takes its full moons from tables, so Easter can differ from a date worked out from the real Moon.

The Easter rule goes back to the First Council of Nicaea in 325, which wanted one Easter Sunday for the whole church. The Gregorian reform of 1582 brought new tables for the church's full moons, and Catholic and Protestant churches still use them.
